Disruptive mentoring: encouraging growth within the organization

The art of mentoring is based on a sound base of research and experience. It is a hybrid approach that combines elements of mentoring and coaching into a mentoring methodology that explores possibility in relationship. Successful mentoring is also an art.

Your role as a mentor is best described as being a learning advisor and a motivational coach.

As a leader and mentor, you need to be aware that sometimes your learning partner (also maybe an employee in your area of responsibility) approaches you because they want to do somehting new. Your learning partner is bored and no longer learning in their current position.

As the mentor, you need to encourage disruption: ask insightful questions that challenge your learning partner to expand his or her horizons of possibility.

You help break non-productive patterns and behaviours and incorporate storytelling to illustrate key learning points from your own and other examples of workplace challenges and successes.

Your role as a mentor is to help your learning parter jump, from what has become comforable and boring (the death zone), to the bottom of a new learning curve, hopefully within your organization.
